Caption: BCG vaccine electrophoresis. Scientist researching a DNA bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine for tuberculosis (TB) tests DNA purity using electro- phoresis under ultraviolet light. A deoxyribo- nucleic acid (DNA) vaccine consists of purified DNA that codes for a disease antigen. Here, the purity of DNA coding for the TB antigen 85 is determined using electrophoresis gel (pink) seen under ultraviolet light. This work is lead by Professor Content and Dr Huygen at the Brussels Pasteur Institute who are developing a vaccine with DNA coding for antigen 85. Such a vaccine could provide TB protection for humans, including HIV-positive people who are at extra risk from TB.
