DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is present in every living thing. It is formed of two strands (orange and green) of alternating ribose sugars and phosphate residues. These are wound around each other, and held together by the interactions of inwardly pointing bases (blue lines). The sequence in which the bases appear along the strands determines the genetic code. By studying the code, the cause of genetic diseases and hereditary characteristics can be examined.
