Caption: DNA research. View of microtubes containing purple solutions of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) lying on top of an autoradiogram. The bands on the autoradiogram represent the sequences of genetic code of these DNA samples. To produce an autoradiogram, a sample of DNA is broken into short fragments by an enzyme and these fragments are radioactively labelled. Then the DNA is placed on an electrophoresis gel over which an electric field is set up. In the electric field the DNA fragments migrate at different rates across the gel and separate into bands. Finally these radioactive bands are transferred onto photographic film.
