Caption: DNA BioChip inventors. Ulrich Birsner (front) and Hubert Bernauer, DNA BioChip inventors, studying DNA test results on a computer screen. The BioChip allows cheap and rapid simultaneous analyses for infectious organisms to be carried out on samples of food and blood. It consists of several tiny dots of DNA placed on a glass slide. Every dot contains a different type of DNA, each designed to bind to specific genes on the DNA of one the organisms to be tested. The BioChip is then scanned by a laser, which highlights the positive results, indicated by the peaks here. Birsner and Bernauer work at BioChip Technologies, based in Freiburg, Germany.
