Caption: Bacteria for human genome research. Petri dishes with a robot picker (top centre) as it selects bacterial colonies which contain human DNA for the human genome project. The human DNA is tagged so that those colonies containing it are easily recognised. The blue colonies here have no human DNA, but the paler ones do. Human DNA is placed in bacteria so that they clone it as they reproduce. The human genome project aims to find the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) base sequence of all human genes. This will allow for improved drug design and a greater understanding of genetic diseases. Photographed at the Sanger Centre in Cambridge, England.
