Computer artwork illustrating the potential of short interfering RNA (siRNA) sequences to block human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. siRNA (purple) is binding to a newly synthesised viral transcript, blocking the expression of viral structural proteins and preventing assembly of a new virus. siRNA can also block expression of the human CD4 gene, which normally expresses a cell surface receptor used by HIV to gain access to a cell, by about 75%. This effectivly prevents infection.
