Caption: DNA analysis. Robotic equipment being used to add samples of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) to a series of vials. The DNA will be amplified using the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technique. This uses a bacterial DNA-copying enzyme to replicate small amounts of DNA and increase the amount of DNA that is present. This then allows further analysis of the DNA. DNA is found in cell nuclei, and contains sequences called genes. An individual's unique genetic profile can be used to identify them. Because DNA can be replicated with the PCR method, only a small sample of DNA is needed to identify someone. This is a Packard Multiprobe robot.
