Caption: Genetic research. Genetically modified bacteria containing human DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) being spread on a petri dish by glass marbles. Bacteria divide rapidly and producing many copies of themselves, making them ideal for cloning human DNA to be sequenced. DNA sequencing determines the exact order of the four bases that make up a gene. Genes are regions of DNA that encode how every cell in the body works. Sequencing DNA makes it possible to compare normal and abnormal versions of the same gene, which could reveal the exact cause of a genetic disease.
