This image is part of the feature Stem Cell Protector

Caption: Drug production in fermenter. A technician operates a fermentation unit used to culture yeast, in the production of Stem Cell Protector (SCP) drug. The fermenter allows heat and oxygen transfer in the efficient culturing of the yeast. The yeast is genetically engineered and contains a gene to produce the SCP protein. This protein is then purified for use as a drug. SCP is a drug which protects the bone marrow in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Chemotherapy kills tumour cells plus healthy bone marrow cells. SCP lowers these side-effects of chemotherapy and may prevent bone marrow transplants. Photographed at British Biotechnology Group in Oxford, UK.
