Caption: Microbe fermentation unit for the production of drugs, hormones and enzymes for medical and industrial use. This is the top of a submerged fermentation unit with a capacity of 120,000 litres. It is used to ferment recombinant microbes that have been genetically engineered to produce a drug or enzyme; for example statins that are taken to reduce cholesterol levels, or enzymes for use in the food industry. Photographed in 2004 at Biocon, a biotechnology company in Bangalore, India.
