Microbial fermentation. Technician checking a microbial fermentation unit. The fermenters provide optimal growing conditions for the microorganisms. They provide nutrients, remove waste products and maintain an optimal temperature for reproduction. The microorganisms being grown have been genetically modified to produce a product they would not usually make. Such products can include antibodies, human hormones and enzymes.
