Caption: Genetically engineered beer. Professor Bernard Atkinson holds in one hand a bottle of the first genetically engineered beer "Nutfield Lyte". In the other hand, he holds a petri dish containing a growth of yeast from which the beer was made. Prof. Atkinson is director of BRF International, the Brewing Research Foundation responsible for developing this beer. Genetically engineered strains of Brewer's yeast are produced to enhance brewing efficiency, change the flavour of the beer (in both sugar and alcohol content), and to cut the costs of production. "Nutfield Lyte" is said to taste like most premium lagers. BRF Inter- national is based in Nutfield in Surrey, England.
