Caption: Harvesting algae on a small farm near Bangphok, Thailand. A blue-green alga, Spirulina sp., is grown in large open-air ponds and harvested using this simple sieve table to filter the algae from the water. They are used for producing food dyes or dried and used as a protein-rich health food. Pigments exctracted from Spirulina are also used as a stain in immunology.
