Caption: Agrigenetics: petri dish containing plant callus tissue culture. Callus tissue is a shapless mass of tissue that forms around a wounded site. It also forms in plants that have been grown from tissue culture (as these ones have). Tissue culture is a technique of plant breeding which involves growing isolated plant cells, or a single cell, taken from almost any part of the parent plant. These cells are reared under controlled conditions in a sterile growth medium. Calluses develop, from which whole plants can often be regenerated. This technique enables prolific & rapid propagation of some plants, proving useful to commercial growers.
