Caption: Human protein produced by a leaf. Confocal light micrograph through a leaf infected with viruses, showing where luminescent viral proteins are produced (green). The viral coat proteins can be used for human therapeutic use. Called 'overcoat' technology, the engineered plant viruses carry large peptides (proteins) on their surface. When a leaf is inoculated with the viruses, they replicate inside the plant and produce large quantities of protein which can be harvested. The unique proteins include human glucocerebrosidase to treat Gaucher's disease, and many types of industrial enzymes. Photographed at the Scottish Crop Research Institute in Dundee, Scotland.
