Caption: Grapevine culture. Biotechnology technician checks a young cloned grapevine plant growing in culture in a laboratory. Racks of test tubes containing these genetic plant clones are seen growing under illuminated conditions. A layer of jelly in the bottom of each tube is a sterile soil-substitute containing the nutrients needed by the growing plant. These plants are grown from tiny fragments, or single cells, of an experimental "parent" plant. The parent plant has been genetically engineered for a useful trait such as fungal resistance. Photographed at the Institute of the Vine and Wine, University of Bourgogne, France.
