Caption: Transgenic melon cell culture. Flask containing culture cells of genetically engineered (trans- genic) melon plants. Cells are growing on a solid growth medium after receiving a gene which delays the fruit ripening process. Bacteria introduce the gene into cells. The cells are then grown into mature melon plants. Melon fruit normally ripens in 3-4 days and must be sold 4 days later before it rots. Ethylene gas emitted by the fruit causes its own ripening. The transplanted gene reduces ACC-oxidase and blocks the ethylene gas pathway of ripening. Transgenic melon fruit keep for 50 days without rotting, with fresh taste and smell main- tained.
