Caption: Transgenic melon plant culture. Container in which young genetically engineered (transgenic) melon plants are growing. The plantlets are on a growth medium, grown from cells transplanted with a gene that delays ripening of melon fruit. The plantlets will be grown into mature transgenic melon plants. Melon fruit normally ripens in 3-4 days and must be sold 4 days thereafter before it rots. Ethylene gas emitted by the fruit causes its own ripening. The transplanted gene reduces ACC-oxidase and blocks the ethylene gas pathway of ripening. Transgenic melon fruit keep for 50 days without rotting while fresh taste and smell is maintained. Research at E.N.S.A.T. in Toulouse, France.
