Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Genetically modified sugar beet. Researcher examines the growth of genetically modified (GM) sugar beet plants Beta vulgaris, in a field trial. The beet plants are seen growing healthily. Modification of the beet's DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) has given it resistance to a weedkiller, while any other plants around have no such protection when the field is sprayed with weedkiller. Altering DNA, which contains the plants' genetic code, may be used to impart many beneficial properties to crops. However, it is controversial whether GM foods are as healthy to eat as non-GM foods. This field trial was conducted by Agrevo in Lincolnshire, England.
