Caption: Genetically modified maize (Zea mays, green) and dead lamb's quarter or pigweed (Chenopodium album, yellow). This maize, or grain corn, has been genetically modified to be herbicide resistant. When the crop is treated with herbicide the maize is unaffected, but weeds are killed. This form of biotechnology aims to increase the yield of such crops by reducing competition with weeds. Photographed in Iowa, USA.
