Caption: Genetically engineered tomato plants. Researcher holding tomato seedlings in a field of genetically engineered tomato plants. The plants have had a gene (iaaM) that prevents their tomatoes from developing seeds added to their genome. This was achieved by adding the gene to bacterial cells in a plasmid, a small circle of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The bacteria were then allowed to infect tomato plant cells. The cells that had taken up the plasmid, or been transformed, were then cultured, grown into seedlings and then planted in the field. Photographed at the University of Verona, Italy.
