This image is part of the feature Transgenic Sheep

Caption: Transgenic sheep. Milk from transgenic sheep being collected for analysis. The sheep are the offspring of ewes which have had a human gene incorporated into their DNA. The gene is responsible for the production of the protein alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT), and is inherited by the offspring. AAT is produced in mammary cells, and excreted in the sheep's milk. The AAT may then be isolated and used in replacement therapy to treat hereditary AAT deficiency in humans, a lung disorder which affects 100,000 people in Europe and North America alone. Photographed at Pharmaceutical Proteins Ltd., Scotland.
