This image is part of the feature Transgenic Sheep

Caption: Transgenic sheep. A transgenic ram in its pen. This ram, called 'Dick Tracy ' has had a human gene incorporated into its DNA. The gene is responsible for the production of the protein alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT), and is inherited by the ram's offspring. AAT is produced in mammary cells, and excreted in the ewe's milk. The AAT may then be isolated and used to treat hereditary AAT deficiency in humans. The figure at right is Professor Ron James, managing director of Pharmaceutical Proteins Ltd., Scotland., who pioneered this research.
