Caption: Transgenic mouse research. A genetically trans- formed mouse is handled and manipulated in the gloved hands of a researcher. The mouse is kept in an isolation chamber at negative pressure. It has been infected with a harmless virus which acts as a vector to implant genetic instructions into the cells of the mouse. In this way the mouse might develop a genetic disorder such as muscular dystrophy, haemophilia, an immune deficiency, or cancer. Researchers are then able to study the genetic basis of these diseases, and develop a gene therapy. Photographed at the Gustave Roussy Institute - Villejuif in Paris, France.
