Caption: Cloning technique (first of 3 pictures). Light micrograph of the removal of DNA genetic material from a sheep egg during cloning. At centre is a round egg cell from a sheep. At left a pipette holds the egg; at right a microneedle penetrates the egg to remove its DNA. The empty egg cell will then be implanted with an embryonic sheep cell (photos G285/018 & G285/019); a spark of electricity will cause the egg to begin growing into a lamb, nourished in the womb of a surrogate sheep. In 1996, this research at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, produced the world's first cloned sheep.
