This image is part of the feature Glowing Mice

Caption: Fluorescent transgenic mice. Litter of mice containing four which are glowing green under blue light. They do this as they contain a protein (green fluorescent protein, GFP) from a glowing jellyfish (Aequorea victoria). The eggs from which these mice developed were infected with a virus carrying the jellyfish gene, causing the gene to be incorporated into their DNA. A gene is a segment of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) which has a specific function, in this case the production of GFP in their cells. This genetic engineering technique could be used to mark cancer cells in human patients to follow their movement around the body.
