The gene for enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), has been introduced into the mosquito genome. EGFP is a version of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria that had been mutated in the lab to give a brighter glow. The green glow shows that the EGFP gene has been successfully introduced. This raises hopes that a gene could be introduced that would make the mosquitoes unable to carry the Plasmodium sp. protozoa that cause malaria, which would save millions of lives.
