Caption: Transgenic sheep. These transgenic sheep were bred at the Biotechnology Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (RASHN). The world's first fully transgenic sheep was created in 1991. Transgenic methods involve transferring genetic material from one animal to another. When this is done with farm animals such as sheep, the aim is usually to increase the quality and yield of meat, milk or wool. Photographed in 1999, in the Moscow region of Russia.
