Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Proteomics research. Technician preparing a 2-D gel used in proteomics research. Proteomics is the study of the structure and function of all the proteins in an organism. The gel separates proteins by their charge and mass. This is the first stage of the separation: the gel (containing the proteins) is subjected to a pH gradient, causing proteins to move through the gel by amounts dependent on their charge. In the second stage, the gel has an electric field placed across it, moving proteins by amounts dependent on their mass. Protein fragments can then be removed and analysed.
