Caption: Bluetongue virus research. Virologists studying a DNA autoradiogram produced from the genome of the bluetongue virus (BTV). BTV, a member of the orbivirus genus, is a pathogen of cattle and other ruminants that is transmitted by biting midges. The disease causes a high fever, swelling of the face and tongue and a cyanotic (blue) tongue. There is no treatment but the disease can be prevented by vaccination and control of the vector. There are no reports of transmission to humans.
