Caption: Biologist adjusting equipment before carrying out a coupled gas chromatographic- electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) process on the antenna of a wheat stem sawfly (Cephus cinctis). The sawfly is a destructive pest which lays its eggs within wheat stems, which the larvae feed on before they become adult flies. The antennae provide the sawfly with its sense of smell, and the GC-EAD technique identifies precisely which chemicals the antenna can detect. This will allow control methods, for example traps, to be designed, using chemicals that will attract the flies.
