Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Algae research. Marine scientist Dr Gary Caldwell studying a petri dish of freshwater algae. The algae have been cultured to see if, due to pollution, they are producing toxins that could affect salmon larvae. Salmon larvae hatch on riverbeds and rise through a biofilm that includes algae, potentially exposing themselves to any toxins within the algae. Photographed at the Department of Marine Science and Technology, Newcastle University, UK.
