Grape vine DNA research. Researcher at the University of Milan grinding up a leaf of the Grenache grape variety (Vitis sp.). This formed part of a study where the DNA extracted from these samples was analysed to help determine the geographical origin of the vines. Genetic analyses from more than 500 sites revealed that vines do not only have one single origin, as was thought, but several origins around the circumference of the Mediterranean Basin.
