Caption: Genetic modification of vines. Researcher cultivating different varieties of vines in the laboratory. The petri dish and the test tube show a vine in two different stages of its development. In vitro techniques can be used for example to produce varieties of grapes without pips. Seedless grapes present two distinct advantages. They eliminate the need for the consumer to de-seed the grapes prior to eating. And secondly, any seeds cracked during pressing result in an unpleasant tasting wine. Photographed in 2004.
