Caption: Genetic modification of vines. Cultivating different varieties of vines in the laboratory, the petri dish containing embryos of vines under development. In vitro techniques can be used, for example, to produce varieties of grapes without pips. Seedless grapes present two distinct advantages. They eliminate the need for the consumer to de-seed the grapes prior to eating. And secondly, any seeds cracked during pressing result in an unpleasant tasting wine. Photographed in 2004.
