Caption: Grape vine DNA research. Doctor Fabrizio Grassi of the University of Milan picking some leaf samples from the Grenache grape variety (Vitis sp.) as part of a study. DNA extracted from these samples was analysed to help determine the geographical origin of the vines. Genetic analyses from more than 500 sites revealed that vines do not only have one single origin, as was thought, but several origins around the circumference of the Mediterranean Basin.
