Glasshouse, Millennium Seed Bank, Wakehurst Place, Sussex, UK. The Millennium Seed Bank Project is an international effort aimed at safeguarding seeds from 30,000 species of flowering plants. The plants in the foreground are Cylindrophyllum hallii that have germinated from seeds stored in cold storage. This South African plant is extremely rare, with only a few surviving individuals in the wild. The glasshouse-grown plants will be reintroduced into the wild to prevent its extinction. In 2007 the seed bank contained over a billion seeds from over 18,000 species, making it the largest wild seed collection in the world.
