Caption: Rat in a maze. A white laboratory rat, Rattus norvegicus, moves through a maze during an animal experiment. This behavioural experiment tests its ability to orientate in, and memorize, a maze. This is an albino rat bred from the original brown rat or Norway rat. Apart from laboratory mice, the white rat is the commonest mammal used in animal experimentation. Animals may be used to research behavioural theories or the safety of medical and cosmetic substances. The physiology of the white rat is in many respects similar to human physiology. However, suffering caused by animal tests, particularly in cosmetics research, has led to calls for legislative control.
