Laboratory rat. View of an albino laboratory rat (Rattus norvegicus). Albino rats were bred from the original brown or Norway rat. The white rat is one of the commonest mammals used in animal experimentation. Animals may be used to research behavioural theories or the safety of medicines and cosmetics. The physiology of the white rat is in certain respects similar to human physiology. However, suffering caused by animal tests has led to calls for legislative control.
