Ant research. Colour-coded ants (Pachycondyla apicalis) from Brazil tending their young in an artificial plaster nest. Ants are highly-organized social insects with a four stage life cycle. The solitary queen ant (not seen) lays eggs (some in the ant's jaw at lower centre) which hatch into the white larvae (grubs) at lower left. After a period of feeding the larvae become brown pupae (at right) as they develop into adult ants.
