Caption: Experimental animals. Female rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) and her infant. These monkeys were used in experiments performed in the 1950s by Harry Harlow of the University of Wisconsin, USA. The experiments studied the effects of separating infant monkeys from their mothers. They showed that maternal care was needed for monkeys to undergo normal psychological development.
