This image is part of the feature Science And The Honeybee

Credit: VOLKER STEGER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

Caption: Bee in a holder. Honeybee (Apis mellifera) restrained in a tube for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI is a technique, usually used in medical diagnostics, that uses a magnet and radio waves to build an image of a body's internal structures. A very strong MRI machine has been used by scientists at Wurzburg University in Germany, to provide almost cellular resolution of the development of a honeybee. Honeybees are economically important as pollinators of many of the world's crops. Photographed in 2003.
