Caption: Cockroach locomotion research. Madagascan giant hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa) on miniature obstacle course. The adjustments the insect makes to the uneven surface of the course are being studied here. Multi-legged animals are more stable and able to run along uneven surfaces without involving complex neural signals to it's brain. Robot engineers are using these studies to develop robots that mimic animal forms of locomotion. Photographed in 2005 at the PolyPEDAL Lab, University of California at Berkeley, USA.
