Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Honeybee brain research. Researcher studying micrographs (on screen) of the brain of a honeybee (Apis mellifera). The honeybee's small brain (fewer than one million nerve cells) is used as a model system for research into behaviour, particularly that associated with learning and memory. Researchers here are using the bee's ability to learn and remember floral cues, such as colour, shape and odour, when coupled with food rewards to study the underlying neural mechanisms of learning and memory. Photographed at the University of Newcastle, UK.
