Caption: Vine samples for genetic research. Serena Imazio, a researcher at the University of Milan, collecting leaf samples from the Grenache grape variety (Vitis sp.) as part of a study. The DNA extracted from these samples was analysed to help determine the geographical origin of the vines. Genetic analyses from more than 500 sites revealed that vines do not only have one single origin, as was thought, but several origins around the circumference of the Mediterranean Basin.
