Monoclonal antibodies promise great potential for both the diagnosis & treatment of disease. They are produced by fusing a lymphocyte from the immune system with a tumour cell; the resulting "hybridoma" can then be cloned to produce genetically identical copies, each of which will secrete the single type of antibody produced by the original lymphocyte.
