Caption: Photograph of chamber containing monoclonal anti- bodies implanted under skin of patient with breast cancer (glioma). Monoclonal antibodies (a cloned line of single, specific antibodies) are secreted by hybridoma cells (a fusion of resilient & proliferative tumour cell with a single, antibody- secreting lymphocyte) & targeted to antigen sites on malignant cells. Evidence suggests that the antibodies are localised in tumours; further work involves checking that healthy tissues are unaffected & then coupling cytotoxic drugs or toxins (ie chemotherapy) to the antibodies, so they too are delivered to the tumour target areas.
