Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Cell storage. A technician handles tubes of monoclonal antibody-producing cells stored in liquid nitrogen. Monoclonal antibodies are antibodies which all recognise the same substance. They are used in detecting viruses and other substances, for studying cell surface antigens, in tissue-typing and in research. Cells which produce monoclonal antibodies are formed when specific antibody-producing lymphocytes are fused with myeloma (tumour) cells. The resulting hybridoma cells can divide indefinitely and continuously produce monoclonal antibodies. The hybridomas are cold-stored in liquid nitrogen and can be removed when their products are required.
