Caption: Monoclonal antibodies. Computer artwork of monoclonal antibodies approaching a cancer cell. These Y-shaped antibodies are engineered to be identical and specific to only one type of antigen on the surface of cancer cells. Because of their specificity they could be used to deliver cytotoxic agents to cancer cells without affecting other cells in the body. Monoclonal antibodies were first produced in mice in 1975 by mixing antigenic spleen cells with cancerous B cells. This produced a strain of cloned cells that produced identical antibodies to a specific antigen.
