Caption: Bacteria detection. Technician using monoclonal antibodies to detect Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria in cow faecal samples. The E. coli strain O157:H7 causes food poisoning in humans, and it is important for farmers to protect their livestock to prevent them harbouring the bacteria. Monoclonal antibodies, antibodies that all recognise the same substance, are used to detect the bacteria in samples of faeces. As part of wider surveys, this technique provides information about where and when outbreaks are likely to occur.
